The world’s first icebreaker powered by liquefied natural gas, Polaris, was delivered from the Helsinki shipyard in 2016. The shipowner describes Polaris as the world’s most environmentally friendly diesel-electric icebreaker.

Polaris is a showcase of Finnish shipbuilding expertise. Its innovative design is reflected, for example, in the hull form and propulsion equipment. The ship was specifically designed for the demanding conditions of the Baltic Sea, and can also be used for emergency towing and oil spill response.

In addition to machinery design, Planneri strongly contributed to supporting the production phases. Planneri also brought added value to the design and construction of Arctic ships.
