Icon-sarja (Meyer)

Meyer Turku is building Icon-class cruise ships for Royal Caribbean Group, among the largest ships in the world. The first ship, Icon of the Seas, was delivered to the cruise line in 2024. The second ship, Star of the Seas, was completed in 2025. The third Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, is scheduled for delivery in 2026. The Meyer Turku shipyard is already constructing the fourth and fifth ships in the Icon series.

“When the Icon series began, our designers worked on the system diagrams. We were involved in designing, among other things, the cooling water systems. We’re now working on a modification request from Meyer for a diagram that we originally designed,” says Planneri Project Manager Petteri Vähätupa.

The Icon-class cruise ships are sister ships, but not completely identical. Planneri Group has been involved in the design of all Icon-class cruise ships built to date.

“When a ship has been in operation for a year or two, the client typically identifies some things that should be done differently in the next ship. Equipment changes also create needs for updating the design,” says Vähätupa.

“Planneri Group has been a long-term flexible partner for us in machinery design. The tasks have mainly consisted of producing and updating diagrams (Cadmatic and AutoCAD), as well as various calculations and research and analysis work related to OPV projects. Our contact person at Planneri Group has been Petteri Vähätupa, whose active and self-driven approach has been a significant support in coordinating the work, both for the shipyard’s machinery design project managers and for the department head,” says Miika Lehtomaa, Head of Machinery Design at Meyer Turku.
